You will receive a personal appointment once your application is reviewed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">In other places, you <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>submit the application in an appointment on site<\/strong><\/span>. Appointments are often difficult to get. If you received a positive asylum decision (entitlement to asylum, refugee status, or subsidiary protection), the time of the asylum process counts as well. If you received a negative asylum decision, the years of the asylum process and Duldung (tolerated stay permit) do not count. If a few months are missing, you can already start preparing.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must have lived <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>legally in Germany for 5 years<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are more <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>exceptions<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> for the residence requirement.<\/span><\/span><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"5\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-5\">5<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-5\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"5\">If your spouse has had the German citizenship for at least two years you do not have to wait 5 years. If you apply together with your spouse or partner (and children) and this person has been living legally in Germany for 5 years, you can have lived in Germany for a shorter time.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calculate if your <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>income is sufficient<\/strong><\/span>.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"6\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-6\">6<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-6\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"6\">Rough estimate: The sum of your net income and child benefits should be greater than: \u20ac1,500 (1 person), \u20ac2,200 (2 people), \u20ac2,600 (3 people), \u20ac3,000 (4 people), \u20ac3,400 (5 people).<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your income must be high enough so that you cannot receive money from the Jobcenter (B\u00fcrgergeld) or social assistance (Sozialhilfe).<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"7\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-7\">7<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-7\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"7\">If you are currently working full-time (around 40 hours a week) and have done so for at least 20 months in the last 2 years, a lower income may be sufficient for you (and possibly your family). An exception also applies to guest workers who came to West Germany before 1974 and contract workers who came to East Germany before 1990.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"de\">Enter your income<\/span><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"8\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-8\">8<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-8\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"8\">Possible income sources are work, pensions, self-employment, unemployment benefits (only ALG1), <span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000005850000000000000000_2454-17\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note modern-footnotes-footnote__note--tooltip modern-footnotes-footnote__note--opened-by-hover\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"tooltip\" data-mfn=\"17\">child benefits, supplementary child allowance (Kinderzuschlag), child-raising allowance (Erziehungsgeld), parental allowance (Elterngeld), BAf\u00f6G (student allowance), BAB (vocational training allowance) and advance maintenance payment (Unterhaltsvorschuss)<\/span><\/span>, rent, heating costs, and the number of children into an <span lang=\"de\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brutto-netto-rechner.info\/buergergeld-rechner.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online citizen\u2019s allowance calculator<\/a><\/span>.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"9\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-9\">9<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-9\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"9\">If you live with a partner, you must also enter their income.<\/span> If your expected citizen\u2019s allowance (B\u00fcrgergeld) is \u20ac0, your income is probably sufficient.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">If you do not meet certain requirements for naturalization (especially income), you may be able to apply for a discretionary decision (Ermessensentscheidung).<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"10\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-10\">10<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-10\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"10\">In this case, you have no <em>right to<\/em> naturalization but the authorities will decide. You have the chance of a discretionary decision if you are a single parent or have children with special care needs or if you are unable to work due to a disability or illness.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Additionally: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must have a <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>valid residence permit<\/strong><\/span>,<\/span><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"11\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-11\">11<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-11\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"11\">Exceptions apply to the following residence permits from which you cannot directly obtain naturalization: \u00a7\u00a7 16a\/b\/d\/e\/f, 17, 18f, 19, 19b\/e, 20, 22, 23a, 24, 25 para. 3-5, and 104c.<\/span> Usually you must not have been convicted of a crime, and your identity must be verified. Since 2024, you <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>do not have to give up your previous citizenship<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; font-weight: bold; font-size: 22px;\">3. Check if a Niederlassungserlaubnis (permanent residence permit) would be a better option<\/span><\/summary>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-2152\" src=\"https:\/\/life-initiative.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gamble-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/life-initiative.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gamble-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/life-initiative.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gamble-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/life-initiative.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gamble.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The requirements for naturalization (Einb\u00fcrgerung) and <a href=\"https:\/\/life-initiative.org\/en\/niederlassungserlaubnis\/\">Niederlassungserlaubnis (permanent residence permit)<\/a> are similar. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take our <a href=\"https:\/\/life-initiative.org\/en\/test-einbuergerung\/\">free test<\/a> to find out if you are eligible to apply for permanent residency or citizenship.<\/span> However, in the following cases, the <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Niederlassungserlaubnis (permanent residence permit)<\/strong><\/span> may be easier to get:\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\">You are a recognized refugees or asylum seekers.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"12\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-12\">12<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-12\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"12\">\n<div>Permanent residence permit after 5 years with A2 German and meeting 50% of the income requirement. Under certain conditions, individuals who were younger than 18 years when entering Germany can obtain a permanent residence permit more easily.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\">You are a skilled worker<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"13\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-13\">13<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-13\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"13\">Permanent residence permit after 3 years of employment as a skilled worker, in case of completing a qualification in Germany after 2 years.<\/span>, or have a Blue Card<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"14\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-14\">14<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-14\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"14\">Settlement permit after 27 months with A1 German proficiency.<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>You are unable to work due to illness or disability.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"15\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-15\">15<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-15\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"15\">You do not need to meet the income criterion to apply for a permanent residence permit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; font-weight: bold; font-size: 22px;\">4. You can take the test at the end of the integration course or indepedently<\/span>. If got have your high school degree, vocational training, or university degree in Germany, you do not need these tests.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"17\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000021850000000000000000_2456\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-17\">17<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000021850000000000000000_2456-17\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"17\">If you attended a school in Germany for 4 years, you also do not need the naturalization test.
